A Note from the Author
Almost four decades ago I got off a Pan Am flight from London and fell in love with New York City. From the first time I stepped into one of its great museums, to the last time I stopped by a newly launched gallery, the art created, exhibited, studied, written and talked about here have been an essential part of that cultural love affair.
I hope that this book might do, at least, two things. Pay tribute to the people in New York's art world whose stories I tell, but also encourage those of you who are new to it – but love this city for so many other reasons – to come and explore.
Art on the Block. It's a New York thing.
